Theology is Dying
In our “Godless” society, does anyone actually know God?
Erm…theology?
Yes, theology. To us in the present day, it seems rather antiquated. Something that was studied in the 19th Century or before. The term conjures up monks in monasteries, or Henry VIII trying to find grounds on which he can divorce his first wife. However, one could argue that theology is in fact more relevant today than it was all those years ago. Our society has vastly changed, so much so that we often find ourselves living in a “Godless” world — or one perceived as “Godless”.
We are distracted by our smartphones, by social media, by the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives; and so, unless we are in a community that practices a faith, the notion of God often does not touch our lives. Therefore, whereas in previous centuries theology was taken for granted, today its very existence needs to be defended.
So, what is theology? Well, in simple terms, theology is trying to explain the reality of God. It can be both discussed purely from an intellectual perspective (such as was done by the Ancient Greeks), but can also be linked to religious sources such as the Qu’ran and Sunnah.
